Pool Length Changes the Distance You Swam

Check the pool before counting

Twenty lengths does not describe one fixed distance. In a 25-yard pool, it is 500 yards. In a 25-meter pool, it is 500 meters. Both sessions can look like the same count in a notebook while covering different distances. Check the posted pool length or ask staff before the session.

Keep the unit attached

Write yards or meters beside the total rather than leaving a bare number. One yard is exactly 0.9144 meters, so 500 yards equals 457.2 meters. You do not need to convert every workout. Keeping the original unit can be simpler and prevents a mistaken comparison when you change pools.

Say what a length means

For clear personal notes, use one length to mean one trip from end to end. People sometimes use lap differently, so explain the count when discussing a set with a coach. Record the assigned distance and repeats as well as your total. If you use a watch, check its pool-length setting and review the count rather than assuming it is correct.

Compare the right things

Different pools can also mean different numbers of turns for a given distance. A time from one pool is not automatically interchangeable with a time from another. Keep the pool size and unit with the result so your next comparison starts with the same question.
