Read two different numbers
On a rowing monitor, stroke rate counts strokes per minute. Pace is commonly shown as the time to cover 500 meters. One describes how often you stroke; the other describes your speed. They are connected, but they are not interchangeable.
Notice the difference
A higher stroke rate does not automatically mean a faster pace. The work in each stroke and your technique matter too. Concept2 explains this distinction in its monitor guidance. Ask an instructor to help you read both numbers while learning the machine.
Give the session one focus
If your session has a rate target, follow that target rather than chasing the biggest number on the screen. A technique session and a timed effort may have different goals. Use the display to understand the workout, not to turn every row into a race.
