A familiar weight can have a new setup
You return to a gym machine, choose last week's weight, and something feels different. Check the seat and other adjustable parts before assuming your strength changed. Another member may have moved them. A machine's setup helps define the exercise you are doing, so it deserves a place next to the weight in your log.
Learn the controls once
Ask a qualified staff member to show you the machine's adjustment points and appropriate setup. Some settings use numbers, others use letters or pins. Record the machine name and the setting that was checked for you. A note from one model should not be copied blindly to a different machine.
Make the note small
A useful entry might read: chest press, seat three, handles as shown by coach, chosen weight, completed reps. Keep it brief enough that you will use it. If the gym has two similar machines, include the location or model so the note points to the right one.
Recheck when something changes
Settings are a reminder, not a permanent rule for your body. Clothing, the exercise variation, or advice from your coach may change the setup. Stop and ask when a position feels wrong. The log's job is to help you repeat an understood setup, not pressure you to keep one that no longer fits.
