Leave Space for the Lift Next to You

An empty patch is not always free space

The floor beside a bench may look empty while its user is resting. It may also be where their weights, arms, or feet will move during the next set. Before placing a mat or starting your own exercise, look at the whole nearby activity rather than just the spot where you plan to stand.

Ask before moving in

A quick question can clear up the plan: are you using this space for your next set? Wait for a suitable break instead of interrupting someone mid-lift. Follow the gym's marked areas and staff guidance. Keep walkways and access to racks open, even when the room is busy.

Your belongings take up space too

A phone, water bottle, or bag can become part of someone else's path. Use the storage areas the gym provides and keep loose items out of active exercise zones. Do not place equipment behind a person who may step back without seeing it. Shared floor space needs a little more thought than a personal corner at home.

Choose a different spot when needed

If there is not enough room, wait or ask staff for an appropriate alternative. You do not need to squeeze a planned exercise into the first available gap. Good gym etiquette is often a small pause before starting, not a complicated rulebook after somebody has already had to move.
