Read the shape of the route
A distance number does not describe every part of a hike. Check the route profile, surface, and where climbs and descents occur. A short route with a long climb can require different planning from a flat outing of the same distance.
Look at the return leg
Notice whether the route finishes with a climb or whether the descent is most of the return. Check current route information and allow time for the terrain rather than relying on distance alone. This article is a planning checklist, not a pace prescription.
Match the outing to the group
Discuss the route before leaving and make sure everyone understands its shape. Choose a plan suited to the group and conditions. An impressive mileage total is less useful than a clear picture of what the actual route involves.
